Final Word on the Obama-Clinton PA Fight

Okay so after 7 full weeks of nothing, empty stories, no new state results, unpredictable fluctuating polls, minor gaffs, race speeches, a Seinfeldian debate about nothing, Bosnia gangster rap tall tales, McCain coasting and media mayhem, I think we're probably closer to where we started coming into Pennsylvania in the after math of Ohio & Texas primaries than we would have thought we would be at this time. Rounding into the Keystone state polls pointed to a landslide in favor of Clinton in PA and impending doom to the tune of anywhere between 15-25 points for Obama depending on which poll you lent credence. Now after all the debris and smoke clears from the scorched Earth the last several weeks provided us, contrary to differing campaigns' expectations for their opponent, I really don't think PA will have changed dramatically enough to set a new narrative either in terms of Hillary gaining a new momentum that changes the ebb and flow of this primary in any substantive way that makes her case any stronger coming out of this state and I don't see Obama taking the state in any game clinching manner that proves he's capable of stealing a game on Hillary's home court that would almost assuredly put this thing away for him. I think however, the single most important, lastong thing to come out of this entire lead up is Obama's speech on race. That's the only thing that will stand as a significant marker for history's sake in the run up to the vote on the 22nd and in the larger context of the story of this nation's search for it's 44th president. Now in all candor, there were some who saw/heard the speech that weren't going to be swayed either way by it or it's honesty no matter what he said in it that were staunch Republicans or likely Hillary voters. As a whole the biggest group of people who were moved by it were Obama voters, or people who were inclined to hear him out and didn't have it out for him to begin with. I think though on the margins there actually was probably a group of people who belonged to neither of those two groups who probably did come out of that speech in Philadelphia who weren't in his corner and were ultimately impressed by him to the point where the veil that stood in front of their faces and prevented them from giving him a look was removed and probably became fans of his in the process but again I'll reiterate this was on the margins and by and large not the overriding case he needed it to be to have any hopes of snatching up PA from the grip of Hillary. That said, I think you can assume he made some headway in an uphill fight to begin with, but there just wasn't enough time or real opportunity to affect this thing in one major way to tilt the state in his favor. The polls say on average that Hillary leads by 6 coming into this weekend and I believe you can probably tack on an extra 2% given the overwhelmingly white population in much of the state. I'm not saying whites are inherently racist against Barack, it's just that well, they represent 74% of the country and I think that matters. It gives them a certain comfort in looking to various aspects of life and civilization and seeing familiarity. That number implies that a white person walks into any room and can expect to see 7-8 people that look like them. Why wouldn't they on a conscious or subconscious level vote that way? It's probably more human nature than anything.

Obama did well, spoke circles around Hillary, kissed countless babies, embraced many older white women and outspent Hillary 5-1 in the state on commercials and advertising but in the end, we here at HAWO will project Hillary wins this by 8%. That's our story and we're sticking to it.

It's Dark and Hell is Hot

But not as hot as my room is right now. AC ain't getting turned on until June. I was raised like that. I can't help it.

You come from a black family and that's standard. Dad wasn't about to pay for air conditioning if it wasn't 85 degrees outside and Summer. Unfortunately for me, it's mid-April and already 80. Oh well, time to pull out the big corner fan and sit still and hope that does it for me. Unfortunately the problem with that idea is if there's already hot ass air trapped in your room, there's little a fan is going to do to counteract the discomfort from the heat you're feeling. All it's going to do is blow hot air right back at you. Genius.

So in that vein, I hope we're in for some rain to break this heat up.

I Need To Visit Brazil...

Like Yesterday. These are pictures of a random Brazilian chick I came by that I can't believe how dope she is.

Brazil needs more me and less distance between Ohio and there.
Damn though I didn't know it was like THAT though. Leandro Barbosa & Nene are idiots. Why leave there (and her) for America to play basketball?

Damn fools.

Wednesday's Woman: Nicole Scherzinger

Many people have speculated what background the lead singer from The Pussycat Dolls is of, what ethnicity she most resembles and if that's much sought after 'Indian Hurr' or baby hair she's got trying to glimpse into her genetic make-up. Me though? I don't care. Whoever put their two together to make her whole I really don't care one way or another. In fact thank God they did or otherwise I wouldn't have the opportunity to see her now.

I read somewhere she's actually from the tri-state (No. Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati/Southeast Indiana area for you non-Midwest folks). What can I say? Something is definitely in the water down where I'm from. Trust me on that. A ton of fine women hail from that part of the country I can vouch for that. Anyway, there's no doubt I nor anyone you know whose honest with themselves has any clue who the Pussycat Dolls are if she wasn't in the group. She's the main reason they're successful, word to Diddy. I don't even listen to pop but if I'm told they're going to be performing on some late night talk show or some Awards show, I'm watching with the sound on mute. Anyway, she's Wednesday's Woman this week, today is for her, next week is really going to be interesting, lol. I got something real special for y'all. Until then, Nicole...

I'm Just Saying...

For the record, I'm a Catholic.

I don't go to church every Sunday but I come through on all the Holy Days of Obligation.

I'd like to think me and God hold each other down when shit gets real. At least I know he's held up his end of the bargain. Lord only knows what I would do if they caught me on a tape in Iraq and I was captured on my knees (n/h) with the threat of beheading.

But all that aside, I think I liked Pope John Paul II way more than I like Pope Benedict XVI. [Quick Story John Paul II was shot back in the 80's, recovered, met with the guy that shot him, visited him in prison many times, ultimately forgives him but told him that while he personally forgave him and embraced him, that he must be punished for his sins and should face his prison term as part of his repentance. But that was the measure of the character of that man. No diss records, no "Hit 'Em Up verses" just love, even for those who would do harm to him. I had love for him. No joke]

Aside from this new pope taking more strong conservative stances than his predecessor, he just don't look like a nigga I would roll with.

He comes from a weird background with old Nazi ties. His eyes look like they're hiding something from people and if it all went down in the streets he doesn't look like he'd have your back. He look like he'd straight Pachanga you [Carlito's Way].

In every picture I've seen of him he looks like he's steadily plotting on someone's downfall.

From what I do know he's at least been guilty of wholesale coverups worldwide for more than a little while everytime a priest has been caught fucking little boys. I speak frank as you'll learn around here. Probably franker than you might be used to reading and I don't mean to demean any fellow Catholic brothers and sisters I may have reading this. I'm one of you. I'm proud of my faith. It's got me through many many tough times and will continue to do so but if you can tell me with a straight face that this guy looks normal or theirs someone in your crew or family or life that you know that looks anything like him than you need to re-evaluate your life.

Benedict has been in power for 2 years now and I remember when he was first named the new pope. I was hoping that the brother from Africa would be the new pope (surprise surprise) but when I saw it was his mug that emerged from the shadows I thought to myself 'I'm not really getting a good vibe from this guy but I'll give him a chance and see if he grows on me'. Well it's 2008 and he hasn't. You tell me if I'm wrong. He looks like he's pulling for Hillary. LOL.

R.I.P Rob & Big

I'd be remiss if I didn't make note that tonight's hour long Rob & Big show will be the series finale, ending what is most likely the most unlikely hit show in MTV's history. I for one will miss it. I don't watch too much television, let alone much of the slop on that joke of a network, that despite it's name doesn't play any music anymore but instead gives you shows like The Hill or Laguna Beach or Life as Ryan that I, a 23 year old black guy from a humble Ohio upbringing, let's say don't identify with. Rob & Big on the other hand bridged cultural gaps. It appealed to my childish instincts and I'm sure succeeded to the same effects to a wide range of cultural cross sections. On a personal level though, it gave me something to laugh at when I got home from work every Tuesday night for the past few years and sadly in a day's time it will be a distant memory, joining that list of great shows that I've had the misfortune of seeing go over the past year (The Wire, The Sopranos). I'm only down to Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dexter & Lost to get me through tough work weeks and stress-filled spans of my life. Of course Curb & Dexter are taking their annual sabbaticals and Lost is on a 4 week break. Anyway, just a heads up, it comes on at 10 tonight and it's the last episode forever, so don't miss it.

Alicia Keys In BLENDER Magazine

“‘Gangsta rap’ was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other,” she says, putting down the sandwich. “‘Gangsta rap’ didn’t exist.”

Come again? A ploy by whom?

She looks at us like it’s the dumbest question in the world. “The government.”

Alicia says Tupac and Biggie were essentially assassinated, their beefs stoked “by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing.”
- Alicia Keys
Blender magazine May/June '08

Alicia providing us with our "Nigga Please" moment of the month. I've never been one to avoid calling the government's dirty work for what it is/was but this right here is some crazydumbniggashit. This is absolving blame from the dumb niggas responsible for their murders, who were just reckless enough to take the music out of it's proper context at the time and all of it's fictional nuances and make-believe corporate issued trumped up beefs between the two most visible artists of the time, too far. This here wasn't as sophisticated as Alicia imagines it out to be masterminded all the way up by the government.

Nah.

This shit right here was organized niggadry. Cut and dry. Sorry Alicia. I love me some you. Really, I do. But this isn't you. You should really get back to being fine and dropping a couple hot songs here and there and getting me amped up as a lead up to another album only to drop a disappointing 'mixed bag' of an effort when I buy it.

Well, you did give us some nice photos with these comments so it ain't all bad. In fact, if all it takes is for a magazine to let you say some wild shit every once and again to get more photos of you, then by all means keep dropping quotes.

Yum. Now what I was scolding this goddess for again?.
